Securing the Dinosaur

September 9, 2017

Outside my window I can see there is a balmy breeze blowing and the sun is shining. So far, it is one of the most delightful days we have had after the searing heat and drowning humidity of summer. Later today, just as evening starts to sneak in, the winds here will start to pick up.

Throughout the night, they will become more erratic and heavy gusts will batter the house from time to time, sort of like a big truck slamming into it. Tomorrow, the main part of the storm is due to hit. This is no ordinary storm, her name is Irma, and she is Godzilla on steroids – twice as wide as the entire state I live in.

Several days ago, I started to review options. First of all, I have dogs and cats and I will not leave my animals behind. I just don’t have that gene in me anywhere. I researched for hours to try to find a hotel in a safer area, but pet friendly hotels are all booked right up through Alabama.

Just a couple of days ago, the storm looked like it was going right up the east side, but no, she shifted dramatically (emphasis on that word there) to the west. She is heading now right for us.

Gas stations near me ran out some time ago. On the highways, for days now, they are so jammed with people trying to escape the storm that it can take hours just to go 5 miles. I had a greater fear of being stuck out there to weather this hurricane in my vehicle filled with dogs and cats than hiding in my house. That was too scary an option, so, I am sheltering in place. My animals will be with me and I with them.

While doing prep this week and watching the path of the storm, I was removing things from my yard like furniture and hanging plants, so that they would not become “missiles” when the high winds arrive. My neighbor Artie came by to help me secure my dinosaur. He is a life size Velocipator who lives at the back of property and looks like he is stepping right out of the jungly part of my property there. He is awesome and his name is Rocky.

Could you imagine though, if suddenly he became airborne and went flying through someone’s window? They would run to see the damage and find a life size Velociraptor in their home! With all of the rudeness this storm will literally throw at us, I did not want to add that Late Cretaceous nightmare to anyone’s day.

Thank you Artie for helping me tie that boy down! Maybe Irma will get one look at Rocky and run away…he is that awesome!

See you all on the other side. Be safe, be happy, be kind to each other, but especially, be kind to the animals.
