Why?

October 2, 2017

Monday morning today started as pretty much every morning does for me. I stood out on the front deck in the dim, gray light just before sunrise, waiting for the dogs to come back inside. I put the TV on to get a peek at what the world is doing. Watching the news is something I avoid because 1) it can be so depressing and 2) there is nothing I can do about it. I was not prepared for this. Who could be? The lead story of the day though absolutely rocked me, and, brought me to tears imagining the terror that had unfolded just a few hours earlier.

Who is Stephen Paddock and WHY on earth would he open fire on a concert? By his position, way up high from inside the Mandalay Bay hotel, this reminded me a bit of that infamous Texas School Book Depository where Lee Harvey Oswald fired down on President Kennedy.

What does this hold for us as a nation now? Does this mean that open air concerts will stop? I hope not. Whatever reasons this man Paddock had for murdering so many people, they don't matter now, not that they ever did. He is dead, so, if this was some sort of warped political agenda, he will never know the full impact of his actions.

Stephen Paddock is now a permanent fixture in history. That might have been it. At this time, we just don't know.

Not only am I outraged and horrified by what happened, I am also outraged at the ongoing media coverage. We as a nation want to know, and, to understand vicariously what happened.

The numbers of people killed is horrifying as are the numbers of people wounded. A mass event like this is just so hard to understand. I am trying to wrap my mind around the incredibly selfish act of opening fire on a group of people out for a fun time, some of whom will never get to go home. I just hope that none of the little children who attended were victims of this event, but those details too will emerge over the next few days.

Whatever the reason or reasons why this man did this, it does not matter. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is so important in anyone's life to warrant this kind of senseless killing.

History now will determine why this happened, and how many people were impacted. I will say that, pretty much the entire country has been impacted.
